About The Book
My journey with Beatrix Potter began as a child and I still have my tattered but much loved Peter Rabbit book from the 1950’s. Little did I know that meeting Helen Bertram of Whitecroft tours would result in this book! Helen is as obsessed with Beatrix Potter as I am with William Morris and it has been her encouragement over several years that has lead me on this journey. In a strange twist of fate while reading Linda Lear’s biography of Beatrix Potter, I discovered a vague connection between Beatrix and William Morris. Linda records that Beatrix sent her early stories to the grandchildren of Edward Burne-Jones; William Morris’s lifetime friend and business partner in his successful company Morris & Co. I also read that Beatrix’s father Rupert was a professional photographer and was often asked by another Pre-Raphaelite artist, Sir John Everett Millais to photograph subjects or scenes for his paintings. Beatrix was also an active member of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings that Morris formed in 1877 and like Morris she appreciated handmade work incorporating a mutual love of nature in the Arts & Crafts style. So through these connections I wonder if both William and Beatrix actually ever met?
I hope through the art of stitching I can bring some of Beatrix Potter’s delightful stories to life and that the projects bring pleasure to others. Each piece is achievable to all levels of stitcher and includes four quilts, a cushion and several smaller items using both cotton and wool felt.
